Chu Tao is 'the way to be a monarch', i.e. the art of ruling. Each and every college of philosophy has its tao, its doctrine of the way in which where life needs to be purchased. At last in a certain school of philosophy whose followers arrived to be named Taoists, tao meant 'the way the universe will work'; and eventually some thing very like God,
